1. Describe the project before asking for estimates
Start with the address, number of trees, approximate size, available access, nearby structures and any visible damage. Tell providers whether you need routine pruning, removal, stump grinding or debris hauling. Photos may help with initial triage, but a qualified provider should evaluate site conditions before giving a firm price for complicated work.
If a tree touches electrical equipment, appears unstable, or has fallen against a structure, explain the situation clearly and seek appropriate qualified assistance rather than attempting hazardous work yourself.
2. Verify licensing and business identity
For contractor work that requires a California license, check the business using the California Contractors State License Board (CSLB) public database. Confirm the license belongs to the company you're hiring, is active, and covers the relevant classification. The CSLB includes a D-49 Tree Service specialty classification under C-61. Some landscaping services also require appropriate contractor licensing.
Check the license directly at California CSLB's official license lookup. A directory listing or recommendation is not a substitute for checking the live record yourself.
3. Ask about insurance and who will do the work
Ask for the insurer's details and verify current workers' compensation and liability coverage relevant to the work. The CSLB identifies special workers' compensation requirements for licensed tree-service contractors. Find out whether the quoted crew will do the work or subcontract it, and who will supervise the job.
4. Get written bids you can compare
The CSLB recommends obtaining at least three written bids and comparing the same project scope. A tree-service quote should make these points clear:
- Exactly which trees and branches are included
- Whether stump grinding, chipping, hauling and site cleanup are included
- Access requirements, equipment and any property protection
- Who handles permits or approvals if needed
- Estimated schedule, payment stages and change-order process
- How unexpected site conditions affect the price
5. Check recent references and clarify responsibilities
Ask to see similar completed work and recent references. Agree on what happens to cut wood, how gates and fences will be accessed, and how the worksite will be left. Get changes documented in writing rather than relying on a verbal understanding.
6. Use Forjento to organize your request
Forjento is developing a local directory and introduction service in the Sacramento region. You can submit your project details for free; if a participating provider is available, we may help introduce you. We do not currently guarantee a match, appointment, estimate or project outcome. Providers set their own prices and terms.
